The Cleveland Guardians have found another gem.
Parker Messick has turned plenty of heads in his first three MLB starts.
He’s looked poised, calm, and in control, yet, judging by his latest words, he’s still not satisfied with his performances.
Asked about his time in the majors, the young left-handed pitcher admitted that he hasn’t been at his best so far.
“If you’re going to be good in this league, most of the time you’re not going to have your good stuff,” Messick said. “Sometimes you have to pitch with your C stuff.”
Messick has 14 strikeouts with just three walks.
He’s allowed 20 hits and four earned runs in 17.1 innings, posting a 2.08 ERA and a 1.327 WHIP.
Of course, there will be some ups and downs along the way, and even experienced pitchers go through cold stretches at times.
Even so, the 24-year-old has looked like a proven veteran on the mound so far.
The Guardians are also about to welcome John Means, who’s inching closer to making his debut with the team after rehabbing from Tommy John surgery.
That leaves the door open for manager Stephen Vogt to use a six-man rotation for the rest of the season.
But if that’s not the case, Messick may have already done enough to prove that he should be out there and given a chance down the stretch, despite his lack of experience.
The Guardians are trying to make the playoffs, but if they fail, he will at least get the type of experience that will help him grow for upcoming seasons.
