Stephen Vogt does not hand out praise lightly, especially when it comes to young players still carving out their identities at the professional level. That is what makes his recent comments about Cooper Ingle stand out.
Speaking with reporters, the Cleveland Guardians manager was asked about Ingle’s development behind the plate.
“I think there’s a bright future there,” Vogt said.

For a catcher in the early stages of his pro career, that is an encouraging sign.
Ingle, a 2023 draft pick out of Clemson, has steadily worked his way through the system and continues to earn opportunities. The Guardians recently invited him to spring training as a non-roster catcher, giving him valuable exposure to major league pitchers and coaching.
The early results have only added to the buzz. In his first at-bat of the spring, Ingle launched a 390-foot three-run home run off the Brewers, with the ball coming off his bat at 104.6 miles per hour. For a young catcher trying to make an impression, that kind of swing tends to get noticed.

Power is not the only part of the evaluation, though. Catching is one of the most demanding positions in baseball. Game calling, framing, blocking, controlling the overall game, and building relationships with pitchers are all critical pieces of the job. Vogt, a former catcher himself, understands those responsibilities better than most.
Ingle’s path has included time at multiple levels in the minors, and like most prospects, he is still refining his consistency. But the combination of offensive upside and defensive growth gives Cleveland another intriguing piece at a premium position.
The Guardians have built much of their recent success on internal development. If Ingle continues progressing, he could eventually factor into that equation at the major league level.
For now, it is early. Spring training numbers are just a small sample. Still, when the manager says there is a bright future, it is worth paying attention.
