MLB fans want to win, no matter the cost: there is no feeling like watching your team celebrate a World Series championship, or at least go as far as possible knowing the season was a success.
MLB owners, on the other hand, want to make a profit and win as many games as they can while spending the lowest amount of money.
It’s understandable to some extent, even natural, but it can be very frustrating at times depending on how much they are willing to sacrifice to lose.
That’s why owners value executives who can get the most out of a low payroll.
That’s the case of Cleveland Guardians president of baseball operations Chris Antonetti, who is leading the team to the best record in baseball as of Saturday while barely surpassing $100 million in payroll.
“MLB standings and payroll, per @spotrac:
1. Cleveland Guardians 67-42 ($105.2M)
2. Philadelphia Phillies 65-44 ($247.6M)
3. Baltimore Orioles 65-46 ($111.4M)
4. New York Yankees 65-46 ($308.2)
5. Los Angeles Dodgers 63-47 ($235.8M),” Guardians insider Hayden Grove tweeted.

As you can see, the Guardians are easily the best team of the bunch while spending the fewest money on players.
To achieve this level of organizational excellence, lots of things are required: a lot of baseball knowledge, a fantastic team of coaches, talent evaluators, scouts, and player development staffers, a bit of luck, and much more.
Antonetti has all that, and then some.
It’s unclear if the Guards’ roster will be enough to snap one of the longest World Series droughts in baseball history, but they are in a very good position to try.
Ideally, they should have brought in at least another top-of-the-rotation arm, but Cleveland might be good enough to fight for the title as things stand.
They need their young studs like Josh Naylor, Steven Kwan, Jhonkensy Noel, Angel Martinez, Daniel Schneemann, Tanner Bibee, Gavin Williams and Emmanuel Clase, to keep playing at their current level to have a chance.
Of course, they are all led by the incredibly underrated Jose Ramirez, who is playing better than ever before.
Will this be the Guardians’ year?
