The Cleveland Guardians’ impressive season came to an unfortunate end on Saturday night as the team fell 5-2 in Game 5 of the ALCS to the New York Yankees following Juan Soto’s backbreaking 3-run homer at the top of the 10th inning to put the final nail in the coffin.
Matthew Boyd had a string of solid starts for Cleveland in the postseason and gave up just one earned run in 11.2 innings across three games, and he shared his thoughts after the game about what’s next for this squad.
WEWS reporter Camryn Justice shared a clip of Boyd talking about what the team can take into next season, and he said, “I think once you get to experience it out there, this time of year, and you get to know we were three wins away from a World Series, you want nothing else but that.”
Asked #Guardians Matthew Boyd what this team can take into next season. He had a really great answer.

Boyd made just eight starts in the regular season for Cleveland in his first year with the team and it was some of the best work of his career as a starter.
He posted a 2.72 ERA, which is over two full runs lower than his career 4.85 ERA, and even though he didn’t go deep into games into the postseason, he was the only member of the rotation to consistently give the team any sort of length to help out the bullpen.
The elephant in the room with these comments is that Boyd was on a one-year deal and is now a free agent, and at 33 years old, he could be looking at his last chance to secure a solid multi-year deal.
If he is back next year to keep building upon what the team just accomplished, the Guardians are going to have to put up some cash.
