Cleveland Guardians fans have been desperate for the team to make a splash for a big bat for years now and the front office finally listened ahead of this month’s trade deadline. Nathaniel Lowe and Jo Adell were a couple of creative additions who have provided immediate boosts to what is at times a lifeless lineup.
Adell’s power has been on full display since joining the team, particularly during his recent six-RBI masterpiece against the San Francisco Giants. So far, he has been exactly what the Guardians needed and he could even be chasing a unique bit of history in the process.
Sarah Langs of MLB.com shared her stats of the week in a recent article and shed some light on Adell’s enormous power. She pointed out that his mammoth 455-foot homer in that six-RBI game was the longest of the season for the Guardians, and if things stay as is, he will become the first player in the Statcast era to hit the longest homer for two teams in one season.
“Jo Adell currently has the longest home run this season for both the Guardians, with a 455-foot homer on Tuesday, and Angels, at 449 feet on May 10. No player has finished a season having hit the longest home run for multiple teams in the same season since Statcast began tracking (2015), per MLB’s Jason Bernard,” Langs wrote.
Adell’s power has never been a question since he came into the league, but his inability to stay healthy and maintain any sort of consistency got him off to a rocky start. He broke out with 37 homers last season and it has been easy to see why since he has joined the Guardians.
Unless Rhys Hoskins or maybe Chase DeLauter can rip into one before the end of the season, it’s unlikely anybody tops Adell’s 455-footer. It’s not a stat that is going to go down in the record books, but it’s a nice feather in Adell’s cap. Hopefully he has a lot more of those kind of homers in him for the stretch run.
Cleveland opened its series with the Colorado Rockies with an encouraging 9-1 victory on Friday and will look to keep the momentum rolling against a number of bad teams up next on the schedule. Maybe that altitude can even lead to Adell breaking his own record.
