The Cleveland Guardians are approaching Opening Day with several key roster decisions still unresolved, and one veteran’s future with the team is suddenly looking far from secure.
As spring training winds down, the spotlight has turned to Nolan Jones, whose performance — or lack thereof — is creating growing concern inside and outside the organization. What once seemed like a straightforward decision has now become one of the most difficult calls the Guardians will have to make before finalizing their roster.
The situation is especially notable given the team’s commitment to Jones. After a disappointing 2025 season, Cleveland could have easily moved on. Instead, they chose to bring him back on a $2 million deal, signaling belief in his potential to rebound.
So far, that decision has not paid off.
Jones has continued to struggle this spring, raising legitimate questions about whether he deserves a spot on the Opening Day roster.
“If you’re putting your best 26 guys out there on the roster to start the season and you’re trying to win games, I don’t know that Nolan Jones right now gives you that opportunity,” Noga said. “I would not be surprised to see him cut loose.”
Other players are making compelling cases for roster spots, which is only increasing the pressure. Younger options and role players have stepped up during spring training, showing consistency and production that Jones has not been able to match.
Jones was given opportunities throughout last season to turn things around, and the struggles have carried into this spring. While the organization clearly believes in his talent, there is a growing gap between that belief and what is being shown on the field.
The Guardians could choose to keep Jones early in the season for flexibility reasons, especially if other players have minor league options remaining. That path would allow the team to delay a final decision while preserving depth.
But even that strategy comes with risk.
If the goal is to put the best possible roster on the field from Day 1, the argument against keeping Jones becomes stronger. Teams with postseason aspirations cannot afford to carry players who are not contributing.
That is what makes this situation so important.
With Opening Day fast approaching, the margin for error is shrinking.
What once seemed like a routine roster decision has now turned into one of the most consequential storylines of camp. And unless something changes quickly, the possibility of the Guardians moving on from Jones is becoming more real by the day.
