The Cleveland Guardians have built a strong reputation for developing elite pitching talent, consistently producing major league arms through their farm system.
However, the organization has struggled to replicate that success with position players, creating an imbalance that has frustrated fans and raised questions about their development approach.
Insider Joe Noga recently explained why the team faces unique challenges when it comes to developing hitters compared to pitchers.
“The hitters and position players that you’re trying to develop are exposed to or open to a lot more possibilities or types of injuries. You got knees, hands, elbows, arms, all sorts,” Noga said. “Some of these top prospects like George Valera or Chase DeLauter, we’ve seen all of those kinds of injuries slow them up and slow their progression, and it’s never really a straight line with a position player.”
Cleveland’s pitching staff carried the team into the postseason last season, with the rotation dominating in September.
The offense told a different story despite another productive year from José Ramírez.
The Guardians ranked 28th in runs per game at 3.97 and posted a .226 batting average, the lowest single-season mark in franchise history.
Their .669 OPS placed them 29th in baseball, exposing significant gaps in run production.
Late-season call-ups provided encouraging performances that offered hope for the future.
The team’s offense improved after the All-Star break, rising from 3.72 runs per game to 4.33 in the second half.
Management has acknowledged the offensive shortcomings and remains committed to addressing them through player development and potential veteran additions.
The front office is focusing development resources on young players like Valera and DeLauter while evaluating veteran options to add stability.
Cleveland’s strategy balances giving prospects opportunities to develop with ensuring reliable offensive production, which the organization views as essential for legitimate postseason contention.
