The Cleveland Guardians haven’t necessarily raked their way to wins this season.
They haven’t fared that well against southpaws, either.
That’s why getting utility man David Fry back on the field might be crucial for their success, or lack thereof.
He played a big role in last year’s deep postseason run.
According to multiple reports, Fry could be promoted to Triple-A Columbus this Monday.
With that in mind, Paul Hoynes of Cleveland.com shared his thoughts on his potential role with the organization this season:
“When [David] Fry gets back to Cleveland, it will be interesting to see how they use him. Perhaps they’ll work out a rotation with first basemen/DHs Carlos Santana and Kyle Manzardo,” Hoynes wrote. “Fry could normally handle first base, but because of his elbow he’ll be limited to DHing for the rest of the season. That should test manager Stephen Vogt’s ability to juggle the lineup.”
Of course, his health might limit his impact, as he won’t be able to be his usual jack of all trades, Swiss army knife-type player.
He’s recovering from offseason surgery on his right elbow, and the team won’t take any chances.
He’s already cleared several hurdles on his rehab assignment.
Unfortunately, he’s still struggling at the plate, going 0-for-8 at the Arizona Complex League and 1-for-6 at Double-A Akron.
Fry’s injury didn’t allow him to get proper spring training, so the Guardians will most likely let Fry use each and every single one of the 20-day limit for rehab assignments to get back to his usual self.
He was one of the team’s bright spots at the plate last season, hitting .263 with 51 RBI, 18 doubles, and 14 home runs.
He took things even further in the postseason, batting .286 with eight RBI and two home runs, and the Guardians could use any help they can get to get past the Detroit Tigers in the AL Central.
