Not so long ago, the Cleveland Guardians thought they would have a legitimate starter in Triston McKenzie.
Control issues aside, the young hurler often looked like a star in the making.
He was almost unhittable at his best, and although he had a rough outing occasionally, the positives significantly outweighed the negatives.
That might not be the case anymore.
He struggled with injuries two years ago and failed to bounce back in 2024.
That’s why Guardians analyst Mandy Bell believes he might be the key to unleashing this rotation’s full potential next season:
“And with at least one question mark beside each starter’s name (aside from Bibee), it would be tremendously helpful for this team to be able to lean on an experienced starter like McKenzie every fifth day. If he looks like he did in 2022, this is a completely different rotation,” Bell said.
McKenzie spent most of the season in the minors last season.
His command issues were more evident than ever, and he often struggled at Triple-A Columbus as well.
He didn’t even make the postseason roster, which was one reason Stephen Vogt’s team had to rely on its bullpen early and often.
Shane Bieber should be back in the mix as soon as he’s eligible to return from Tommy John surgery, but that will take a while.
We’ve already seen what McKenzie is capable of when he’s at his best.
The arm talent is there, and three years ago, his ability to strikeout batters ranked among the best in the league.
The Guardians boast one of the top pitching coaching staffs in the majors, and perhaps a new season, along with a fresh start, will be just what he needs to get back on track.
If he does so, this team would be significantly more dangerous in 2025.
