Daniel Schneemann has been one of the best players on the Cleveland Guardians so far this season. The versatile utilityman is sporting a career-high 109 wRC+ thanks to a solid .246/.327/.403 line. He has also contributed four home runs and three stolen bases while often being deployed at the top of the lineup and in multiple positions.
While the full-season numbers are solid, they hide a concerning reality. Schneemann hasn’t been producing this month, and the team needs him badly.
Since the start of May, Schneemann has slashed a putrid .143/.238/.179 with no home runs, just two doubles, and a 25 wRC+. He didn’t play on Friday and had a hit and a base on balls on Thursday, but before that day, he didn’t log a single walk in his previous five games.
If you compare Schneemann’s April, when he hit .321/.391/.564 with a .955 OPS and a 169 wRC+, with his subpar May, it’s easy to understand why some on the team are worried. In fact, something similar happened last year.
In 2025, Schneemann had a 101 wRC+ in the first month of the season and a 129 mark in May. After that, he never reached the 100-wRC+ threshold in any other month, wrapping up his campaign with a disappointing 79 mark after a promising start.
Is Schneemann destined for a similar collapse this year? Is he doomed to fail in the summer months? Well, only time will tell if he can make the necessary adjustments to prevent that scenario from taking place. The 2025 campaign is, however, a cautionary tale about sample sizes and the ability to maintain production over the long haul.
Schneemann has been a big part of the Guardians’ 2026 success. His ability to play all over the infield and the outfield while being a productive hitter is an underrated blessing for manager Stephen Vogt. The situation changes if Schneemann turns back into a pumpkin with the bat, but he still has time to prove that narrative wrong.
The next few weeks will be crucial for his 2026 prospects, and the team will give him every possible tool to help him regain his best swing.
