The Cleveland Guardians salvaged the final game of their series against Arizona on Sunday, avoiding a sweep behind another dominant outing from Gavin Williams and a balanced offensive effort in a 5-0 win at Progressive Field.
Williams was outstanding once again, working 5 and 2/3 innings while allowing just one hit and striking out 10 Diamondbacks hitters. It marked yet another strong turn for a pitcher who has quietly built one of the better strikeout resumes in the American League this season. The bullpen picked up right where he left off, as Hunter Gaddis, Craig Yoho, Matt Festa and Cade Smith combined to close out the final innings without allowing a run.
Cleveland’s offense did its part as well. Chase DeLauter drove in three runs while collecting two hits, and Patrick Bailey added a home run and an RBI of his own. Steven Kwan reached base twice and scored a run, while Travis Bazzana and Petey Halpin each contributed a hit and helped keep pressure on the Arizona pitching staff throughout the afternoon.

The win halted a difficult run for Cleveland, which had dropped six of its previous seven games heading into Sunday. Snapping that stretch with a shutout behind Williams offered exactly the kind of response the club needed, both on the mound and in the box score. Craig Yoho, newly acquired in the trade that sent Bo Naylor to Milwaukee, made his Cleveland debut out of the bullpen and worked a scoreless inning, giving the front office an early look at one of the pieces added over the weekend.
The victory improved Cleveland to 57 wins and 56 losses on the season, keeping the Guardians within striking distance in a crowded American League Central race as the calendar turns toward the trade deadline. With Monday’s 6 p.m. cutoff now just hours away, Sunday’s win offered a much-needed reminder of what this roster looks like when both the rotation and the lineup are clicking at the same time.
Cleveland will need much more of that same formula in the season’s final two months if the club hopes to close the gap in the division and secure a return trip to the postseason.
