The Cleveland Guardians, in desperate need of a shot in the arm after getting swept by the lowly New York Mets, called up one of their top prospects earlier in the week as Angel Genao graduated to the bigs and smacked four hits in his debut. It’s unclear where exactly he’ll fit in long-term or if this is just a short-term stay for the 22-year-old, but this team needs all the help it can get these days and if he’s posting four-hit games already, he could stick around a while.
The downside of his promotion is that in order to make room for him on the roster, the Guardians had to make the tough call to designate Gabriel Arias for assignment, and with no minor league options yet, he was claimed off waivers by the Mets. The Guardians officially said goodbye to the veteran infielder on Friday and wished him well on his journey.

Arias spent parts of five seasons with the Guardians and developed into a solid utility infielder over the past two. His best work came last season as he helped the team win the AL Central again with 11 homers, 25 doubles, and 54 RBIs over 129 games, all of which were career highs by a wide margin.
With the Mets obviously punting on this season, the silver lining is that Arias could see a good amount of playing time down the stretch. Bo Bichette and Marcus Semien have had down years for them, and perhaps a change of scenery and a new opportunity is just what he needed.
It’s not the most shocking move given the depth that this farm system has been developing in recent years. Genao needs the reps and could be a foundational part of this team’s future, and unfortunately, that comes at the expense of a fellow young infielder in Arias.
