The Cleveland Guardians did their job on Friday night, coming from behind to beat the Athletics 5-3 at Progressive Field. They put some pressure on the Chicago White Sox, who were playing against the Detroit Tigers when the game in Cleveland ended.
The White Sox actually dominated most of the game, but they ended up losing and helping the Guardians in the process. Cleveland now has a 79-75 record and a one-game lead in the fight for the AL Central over Chicago, currently at 78-76.

As Cleveland sports anchor Nick Camino points out, each team has eight games to go. The job, for Cleveland, is far from done, but Friday represented an excellent day for them, results-wise.
Neither team has a postseason ticket guaranteed yet, so the fight is not just for the AL Central crown: these squads are fighting for the right to play in October. Doing it by winning the division, however, would be far more advantageous.
If the Guardians win the Central and finish the regular season as the second-best division winner (a position they are currently holding, because the AL West-leading Houston Astros are 77-77), they will get a first-round bye and make it straight to the AL Division Series, where they will have homefield advantage.
On the other hand, if the Guardians finish as the third-best division winner or as a Wild Card team, they will risk elimination in the Wild Card round in a best-of-three matchup.
The entire Guardians roster, the manager, the coaches, and the front office all know what’s at stake, and so do fans. All of them, additionally, also know that they need to finish the regular season ahead of the White Sox in the standings because the latter hold the tiebreaker after winning the season series 7-6.
Friday marked the beginning of a key nine-game stretch for the Guardians, and they started things off on the right foot. It’s time to finish the job and secure a ticket to postseason baseball.
If it can come via the AL Central title, Cleveland could be primed for a much better path towards a deep run.
