The Cleveland Guardians have been hit with wave after wave of adversity in recent weeks which has drastically impacted the offense and led to them falling to second place in the AL Central. Every win has been like pulling teeth, including on Saturday as the Guardians squeaked out a much-needed 4-3 win over the Seattle Mariners to head into Sunday with a chance to win the series against their fellow AL contender.
Cleveland couldn’t have done it on Saturday without yet another impressive performance from Slade Cecconi, who has been on quite a roll of late and has really settled in after being the weak link in the rotation early on. With the Guardians swimming upstream lately, it’s tough to appreciate some of the promising developments that have been going on, such as the heater Cecconi is on.
MLB.com’s Tim Stebbins shared that Cecconi now has a 2.63 ERA over 54.2 innings in the past ten starts.
“Cecconi goes 6+ IP, 3 H, 2 BB, 4 K on 87 pitches (55 strikes) He has a 2.63 ERA in 54 2/3 innings over his past 10 starts,” Stebbins wrote.

Saturday was the first win for Cecconi in the month of June despite pitching better than he ever has. He wraps up the month having given up just six runs over 28.2 innings, but he has suffered from a severe lack of run support due to all the injuries to Cleveland’s offense.
The Guardians scored just nine runs over the last six Cecconi starts and lost his last four starts despite him being so dominant. It was relieving to finally see him get a little run support on Saturday even if it was only four runs.
Earlier in the year, Gavin Williams, Parker Messick, and Joey Cantillo were carrying the rotation while Cecconi and Tanner Bibee struggled mightily. That script has flipped of late with Cecconi and Bibee settling in nicely.
Overall, Cecconi continues to improve and the 27-year-old could be establishing himself as a fixture in this rotation long term. He may not turn into an ace, but he is now somebody these fans can count on every fifth day knowing he is going to give the Guardians a chance to win.
