The Cleveland Guardians’ bullpen has been missing right-hander Paul Sewald since late April.
On the 29th, he was placed on the 15-day injured list with a right posterior deltoid strain.
His projected return date wasn’t set in stone, and it would depend on his recovery and how his body responded to treatment.
Things have gone well with his rehab, though, and the Guardians could potentially have him soon.
On Friday, he threw a 25-pitch live batting practice session and came out of it feeling well.
The information was provided by MLB.com, the team’s official website, in their latest injury update.
The injury certainly sounds scary, but Sewald should be able to resume his 2025 campaign in a matter of weeks.
A reasonable expectation would be for Sewald to complete a few more live batting practice throwing sessions before embarking on a rehab assignment in the minor leagues.
It doesn’t have to be a terribly long stint in the minors, since he isn’t a starter and doesn’t need to ramp up to five or six innings.
Realistically, he could be back with the Guardians at some point next month.
It remains to be seen if it will be before or after the All-Star break.
The Guards’ bullpen can use his experience, but only if he is closer to his best version.
Before going down with the injury, Sewald was sporting a disappointing 6.17 ERA in 11.2 innings.
He had been having issues with the long ball, surrendering three in the small workload.
Still, if healthy, the team expects the free agent signing to significantly improve in the second half, offering another arm to navigate the late innings.
