The Cleveland Guardians could use some more firepower at the plate.
They’re not going to make big moves or spend a lot of money, but that doesn’t mean they shouldn’t have more than enough options to choose from this offseason.
If anything, there are plenty of players who could provide a much-needed boost at the right price.
Notably, insider Lance Reisland made a case for the Guardians to pursue Detroit Tigers infielder Gleyber Torres.
“Torres had to settle on a one-year, $15 million deal in his first foray into free agency, but he’ll give it another go after making his third career All-Star team and first since 2019. Torres slashed .284/.386/.437 with nine home runs and 43 RBIs in 72 games through the end of June, but his production fell off in the second half, as he posted a .229/.331/.339 slash line with seven homers and 31 RBIs in 73 games from July 1 through the end of the season,” Feinsand wrote.
Torres can hit better than most of the players in the Cleveland lineup, and he’s familiar with the AL Central.
Yet, he does have some risks.
He’s been a defensive liability going back to his time with the New York Yankees, and though he’s made some strides, he commits head-scratching blunders now and then.
That might be a price worth paying for a team that didn’t get much going on offense last season.
But the Guardians also need to consider their logjam of middle infielders.
Angel Martinez and Juan Brito are looking to make the team, while Brayan Rocchio, Gabriel Arias and Daniel Schneemann are already there.
Add top prospect Travis Bazzana to the mix, and Cleveland might not need to acquire Torres after all.
