The Cleveland Guardians know they can’t compete with the biggest powerhouses, at least in terms of spending. Instead, they will look to allocate their resources smartly.
They usually identify low-risk/high-reward pickups and reclamation projects, and, more often than not, they reap what they sow with them. That’s why some believe they could make a run at Alek Manoah:
“When pitchers need to rebuild their careers after major arm surgery, Cleveland has increasingly become the destination of choice. The Guardians’ reputation for successfully rehabilitating pitchers, particularly those recovering from Tommy John surgery, has become so pronounced that it’s now a recognized organizational specialty — one that could make them the perfect landing spot for recently non-tendered starter Alek Manoah. Manoah represents exactly the type of high-upside arm that Cleveland has targeted in the past. His combination of past success and current rehabilitation status fits perfectly with Cleveland’s model,” per Cleveland Baseball Talk Podcast.
Not so long ago, Manoah was one of the most promising hurlers in all of baseball. He looked like a superstar in the making, and his electric style made him must-watch television.
Unfortunately, as it often happens, injuries took a toll on his career, and he’s been a shell of himself for some time now. Even so, he’s still young and talented, so he’s more than worth rolling the dice on.
The Guardians have one of the best pitching coaching staffs in the game. Even Manoah should be looking forward to getting to Ohio to work on getting back on his feet, especially with guys like Corey Kluber there to give him some pointers. This team isn’t going to break the bank to get the best free agents, but this could end up being a huge reinforcement for them if it pays off.
They already have a solid starting rotation, so it’s not like they desperately need Manoah to be a star or will hang their hopes on him. But if they can bring the best out of him again, this team could be much more dangerous.
