The Cleveland Guardians delivered their first shutout of the year on Saturday with a 6-0 win over the Atlanta Braves and will aim to win the series on Sunday. They have a chance to get through their first five series without losing any of them, which is an impressive feat considering the level of competition Cleveland has faced up to this point.
A major portion of Saturday’s win can be credited to the brilliance of Parker Messick on the mound. Messick delivered 6.2 scoreless innings with just four hits and five strikeouts to lower his ERA on the season to 0.51. As great as he was, it’s tough to even get surprised at this point.
The dominant performance is becoming commonplace for the young lefty, who now has a minuscule 2.04 ERA through his first ten starts in the majors, as pointed out by MLB.com’s Tim Stebbins. He has given up just one run in 17.2 innings thus far and will look to continue his brilliance on Thursday in his next start at home against the Baltimore Orioles.
“Parker Messick goes 6 2/3 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 5 K He has a 0.51 ERA through three starts and a 2.04 ERA through 10 in the Majors,” Stebbins wrote.

Even Messick’s catchers have been blown away by his stuff, command, and composure. Austin Hedges went so far as to say he is going to be a household name soon, which isn’t hard to believe if he continues pitching to a sub-1.00 ERA.
Cleveland’s rotation overall has been the backbone of the team so far, which is about what everyone expected, though maybe not quite to this level. Four of Cleveland’s five starters have an ERA under 3.30 through three full trips through the rotation, with Messick, Gavin Williams, and Joey Cantillo showing signs of potentially making big leaps and establishing themselves as some of the best young arms in the American League.
Messick has proven so far that his success down the stretch last year was no fluke. He was a major reason why Cleveland made an improbable run to sneak into the playoffs, and he has this fan base fired up knowing it might have a potential star on its hands.
