It was revealed on Tuesday night that the Cleveland Guardians decided to promote their No. 2 prospect, Angel Genao, to the majors. They felt they needed a major injection of youth and talent, and the skilled Genao can certainly provide both.
The Guardians, however, knew that they needed to make a roster decision if they wanted to accommodate the top prospect. They had two options: placing third baseman Jose Ramirez on the injured list with renewed inflammation in his surgically repaired left hand, or designating Gabriel Arias, owner of an 85 wRC+, for assignment.
They chose the latter.
“The Guardians have officially promoted Angel Genao. Gabriel Arias has been DFA’d in a corresponding move,” Guardians reporter Tim Stebbins said.

Arias is now removed from the 40-man roster. Per MLB rules, the Guardians now have seven days to trade the player, place him on waivers, or release him. Since the deadline has passed, flipping him to another team is no longer an option.
If no club claims Arias on waivers, he can be outrighted to the minor leagues. The chances of someone claiming him, however, are considered high because he is making close to the league minimum and has plenty of experience and versatility.
Arias might have a mediocre 77 wRC+ for his career, but he can play the four infield positions well and has been in the major leagues for five years. The Guardians, however, grew tired of his unproductive bat, his issues making contact, and his overall sloppy, inconsistent play.
After 1,168 plate appearances at the highest level, Cleveland was convinced that this is basically who he is as a player and decided to upgrade. It wasn’t an easy decision, but it’s the right one.
Arias leaves the roster with an 85 wRC+, five home runs, and four stolen bases in 134 plate appearances in 2026. His 42.5 percent strikeout rate became hard to stomach.
Genao, on the other hand, is coming off a 133 wRC+ in stints in Double-A Akron and Triple-A Columbus. He has 13 home runs and 11 stolen bases between the two levels while striking out just 16.2 percent of the time.
