Since Travis Bazzana was called up to make his much-anticipated MLB debut, the Cleveland Guardians have experienced one of their better stretches of the 2026 season. In fact, they just completed their first sweep of the year with a three-game series win against the Los Angeles Angels.
The Guardians have won six of their past eight games, and they are 9-6 since Bazzana’s debut on April 28. That may not seem like much, but it has kept them in first place in the AL Central.
It also has allowed the Guardians to make a notable jump in ESPN’s latest power rankings, moving up to No. 12 from No. 16.
“Travis Bazzana has the look of a future leadoff hitter, with his ability to command a strike zone. In his first 55 plate appearances, he drew 12 walks while striking out just eight times, and his chase rate — how much he swings at pitches outside the strike zone — was an extraordinary 18.5% going into play Wednesday, the fifth-lowest rate among all hitters with at least 50 plate appearances. The Guardians have loved his grittiness and speed,” Buster Olney wrote.
Perhaps even more noteworthy is the fact that the Guardians are the fourth-ranked American League team, behind only the New York Yankees (No. 3), Tampa Bay Rays (No. 5) and Seattle Mariners (No. 9). Cleveland is ahead of the division rival Detroit Tigers, who fell to No. 16 from No. 8 in the previous ranking. The Chicago White Sox, who are the surprising second-place team behind the Guardians, are ranked at No. 23.
The Guardians have also been thriving lately thanks to the efforts of their bullpen. During a just-completed 13-game stretch without an off day, it helped the team win eight of those games.
Though the offense still has its shortcomings, Bazzana has provided it with some life. After starting his MLB career 0-for-12, he has gone 10-for-33 since then with 10 walks, seven runs scored, and seven stolen bases. With help from shortstop Brayan Rocchio, he also has at least one hit in eight of his past 11 games.
It is generating talk that he may become Cleveland’s leadoff hitter soon, especially with Steven Kwan continuing to struggle at the plate. Bazzana has a .407 on-base percentage so far this season, batting mostly sixth or seventh in the order.
After hosting the Cincinnati Reds this weekend, the Guardians will visit the Tigers for a four-game series that will be their first meeting of the season.
