The Cleveland Guardians lost for the 58th time this season on Wednesday, dropping a stunning game against the New York Mets 6-5 at Progressive Field in extra innings despite an incredible performance from Angel Genao in his MLB debut. They have 57 wins, so they officially fell below .500.
Genao went 4-for-5 with a run and an RBI, and gave the Guardians a late lead with an RBI knock in the seventh inning, becoming the first hitter in Cleveland history with four hits in his MLB debut. Unfortunately, it wasn’t enough to secure the win, as the defense and the bullpen cost them.

Tanner Bibee didn’t walk anyone and struck out 10, but surrendered four runs (three earned) in 5.2 innings as he struggled with the long ball. His ERA is now 3.85.
After two scoreless frames in Cleveland, the scoring movement started in the third inning. Brett Baty hit the first of three homers allowed by Bibee, putting the Mets ahead 1-0. Jorge Polanco didn’t want to be left out and imitated his teammate, doubling the visitors’ lead.
Jared Young doubled in Carson Benge at the top of the fourth to make things 3-0 Mets, still against Bibee. The Guardians would show some signs of life in the bottom of the inning, though.
The deadline additions, Jo Adell and Nathaniel Lowe, were involved in the action, with the former walking and the latter hitting a double that put runners in scoring position with no outs. Travis Bazzana then followed with an RBI single to cut the deficit to 3-1. Unfortunately for Cleveland, they failed three straight times with runners in the corners to end the threat.
The Guardians tied the game in the bottom of the fifth, with Lowe bringing in two runs with a single. One of them was Genao, who did commit two errors, one fielding and one throwing. The latter cost Bibee an unearned run in the fourth.
After getting two quick outs in the top of the sixth, Bibee surrendered a go-ahead homer to Benge. The Guardians loaded the bases with one out in the bottom part of the inning, but couldn’t push the tying run in as Jefry Yan stranded all runners by striking out Chase DeLauter and getting Adell to ground out.
It was a frustrating game for the Guardians, with manager Stephen Vogt ejected and the team leaving a lot of runners on the basepaths. Patrick Bailey, however, made sure to capitalize at least one more time with an RBI knock in the bottom of the seventh that tied the game, and, one batter later, Genao came through with his fourth of the night, bringing home Angel Martinez and flipping the score.
Craig Yoho and Hunter Gaddis pitched one scoreless inning each to give the ball to closer Cade Smith. He got into trouble but was one out away from escaping. Unfortunately, Brayan Rocchio committed a costly error on a chopper hit by A.J. Ewing, and the Mets tied the game in the ninth.
New York was able to score one run off Matt Festa (unearned, due to the ghost runner) in the tenth, but the Guardians left two runners on base in the bottom of the frame and ended up losing. Besides Genao, Lowe and Bailey shined, as each racked up two hits. The first baseman doubled and drove in two. It’s hard to win with three errors and 15 men left on base, though.
The 57-58 Guardians will try to avoid a sweep on Thursday afternoon behind new addition Foster Griffin. The Mets will send their ace, Nolan McLean, to the mound.
