The Cleveland Guardians owe a lot to Jose Ramirez.
He’s been their offensive catalyst for years now, and especially this season.
However, as much as people have grown used to watching him thrive at the plate, this year has been special even by his standards.
Thus far, Ramirez has reached base safely in a career-best 39 consecutive games.
That comes on the heels of posting a career-best 21-game hitting streak.
That’s why first base coach Sandy Alomar Jr., a team legend and 16-year coaching veteran, had nothing but praise for the superstar infielder:
“What Jose is doing is incredible,” said Alomar. “Making contact is huge when you’re going through a streak that long. You have to put the ball in play, and he doesn’t strike out a lot. That’s why a lot of good hitters don’t go through streaks that long because they walk a lot. The strike zone is a lot smaller than when I played, so that makes it easier to walk.”
Alomar knows a thing or two about getting on base.
He had a 30-game hitting streak back in 1997.
Ramirez, on the other hand, has been nothing short of spectacular this season.
He’s had hitting streaks of 21 and 11 games during his 39 consecutive games getting on base.
During that span, he’s hit .377 with 19 RBI, 11 doubles, one triple, and seven home runs.
He’s also scored 30 runs, drawn 15 walks, and he’s stolen 15 bases in 17 attempts, all that while striking out just 17 times and posting a 1.055 OPS.
Ramirez began the streak with a .255 batting average, and he’s now driven that number all the way up to .327.
The Guardians have struggled with inconsistency this season, and their struggles at the plate are something they desperately need to address.
Ramirez is having a special season, and if it weren’t for Aaron Judge’s video game-like numbers, he would be a legitimate candidate for AL MVP.
Now, the team needs to do right by him and add more firepower to the roster so his strong efforts don’t go to waste.
