Having a strong farm system is crucial for a team like the Cleveland Guardians, striving for long-term, sustained success.
When a team has lots of quality prospects, it not only feeds the major league club with talent, but it also represents potential trade chips.
The Guards have traditionally prioritized a strong farm system.
Due to graduations in recent seasons, however, they opened the year ranked 19th among 30 MLB clubs when it comes to farm systems.
They invested a lot of resources in the draft, however, and are now firmly in the top five which is impressive since they also owned the best record in baseball before taking the field on Friday.
“The @RaysBaseball (#1) and @CleGuardians (#4) placed strongly in the new @MLBPipeline farm system rankings! @jimcallisMLB breaks down some of the top prospects to look out for in each organization,” MLB Network tweeted, with Callis’ analysis.

Callis is one of the most respected prospect analysts in the industry, so it’s nice to see him think so highly of the Guardians’ farm.
He explained how the draft helped the Guardians soar through the rankings: they went up 15 spots before the season to this point and are currently fourth in the post-draft update.
They spent a lot on the draft to keep the system competitive, in a class headlined by Travis Bazzana (whom Callis called the best college hitter available) but with additional talented players, especially pitchers.
This class, coupled with existing players in the system like Angel Genao, Ralphy Velazquez, Chase DeLauter and others, has put together a really strong and deep group of prospects.
