It’s the dawn of a new year.
2022 was a treat, but now we shift our focus to 2023.
The Cleveland Guardians were one of many pleasant surprises in 2022, defying preseason expectations and winning 92 games en route to their first American League Central title under the new name.
But there were many things for fans in Cleveland to be thankful for in addition to the team’s surprising success.
Prior to the start of the season, the Guardians managed to lock up their star in Jose Ramirez for the next five seasons.
The team also gave All-Star closer Emmanuel Clase a new contract.
Since the end of the year is the time for list making here is my list of the best things in Cleveland sports in 2022.
1. Jose Ramirez contract extension
2. Guardians win the AL Central
3. Donovan Mitchell trade
4. Darius Garland extension
5. Emmanuel Clase extension— Mike On A Podcast (@MikeBCSN) December 26, 2022
2023 is upon us, and baseball season is right around the corner, which means that soon, the defending AL Central champs will be back in action and ready to build off of a season in which they reached the ALDS.
The Guardians proved to be a pleasant surprise and a worthy postseason contender, but also managed to keep some of their stars around for the foreseeable future.
Clase and Ramirez are locked up, but Cleveland also has a few new faces entering the 2023 season, those being catcher Mike Zunino and slugger Josh Bell, both of whom were free agent signings.
There is a lot to be excited about if you’re a Guardians fan.
The organization has become a well-oiled machine with an exciting group of stars that have the team pointed in the right direction for the future.
We’ll see if the Guardians can build off of their success from a year ago.
