Cleveland could not buy a break in Sunday’s series finale, dropping a tight one to Houston in a game that fit the pattern of so many others this season. The Astros edged the Guardians 2-1, a result that pushed Cleveland to 2-4 on its current nine-game road trip heading into a critical first place showdown with Chicago. The team’s official account kept its message brief afterward.
“Heading to Chicago.”

The loss continued a season defining trend for Cleveland. The Guardians have now played 44 games decided by two runs or fewer, going 24-20 in those contests, and Sunday’s result fit squarely into that category. Houston right hander Kai Wei Teng entered the day having lost three straight starts, yet Cleveland’s offense could not take advantage, managing just one run over six innings against him.
Slade Cecconi gave the Guardians a quality start that deserved a better outcome. He allowed two runs across six innings on six hits, continuing to pitch well even as his record sits at 3-5.
Bazzana opened the game with a leadoff single, his third leadoff hit of the series, and Rocchio moved him into scoring position with a single of his own, but Teng struck out Gabriel Arias and Daniel Schneemann to end the threat before it could develop further. Josh Hader closed the door in the ninth, retiring the side in order to secure the save for Houston.
Cleveland will now shift its focus to a three-game series against the White Sox in Chicago, a matchup with direct first-place implications in the AL Central. Gavin Williams will take the mound Monday night for the Guardians, opposite Anthony Kay for Chicago, in a series that could go a long way toward shaping the division race over the season’s second half.
