The Cleveland Guardians had to place promising outfielder George Valera on the injured list to open the 2026 season as he recovers from a calf issue he suffered in spring training. That opened up a spot for fellow talented outfielder CJ Kayfus to make the team out of camp.
If you followed the 2025 Guardians, you are very much familiar with Kayfus and his skillset. He got off to a sluggish start in August, but turned things on in September with a 145 wRC+ for the month.
Kayfus, however, has gotten off to a slow start in 2026, failing to log a hit in his first 11 plate appearances. It hasn’t been all bad, as he has walked twice and reached a max exit velocity of 101.5 mph, but he hasn’t hit the ground running yet. He also hasn’t looked sharp defensively.
Cleveland might pull the plug on the Kayfus experiment as soon as Valera gets a clean bill of health.
“Kayfus has struggled early on and when Valera is healthy you have to think he might be replaced. I also wonder how long Arias’ leash is if Bazzana gets off to a great start. Also, Gaddis will likely replace Holderman,” Guardians Prospective posted on X.

The analyst was going through some potential roster moves when the Guardians get fully healthy and when they decide to promote Travis Bazzana. All of them make sense.
Kayfus is much better than this, but he will have to show it if he wants to retain his roster spot in the ever-competitive Guardians landscape. While he is talented and was crucial in last year’s run, he doesn’t have the leash of a José Ramírez or a Steven Kwan.
Cleveland is also eager to see what Valera can do over an extended period in the major leagues. He had a 113 wRC+ over a 16-game cameo last year, with a couple of home runs.
Since he is very similar to Kayfus offensively, you can assume that the one who’s hitting will get the nod as a regular in the Guardians’ outfield picture. Currently, Kayfus is not producing.
Is he capable of going on a tear and start justifying his place on the team? Of course he is. However, with the Los Angeles Dodgers coming on the schedule, things won’t get any easier.
