The Cleveland Guardians had to make a tough call to begin the offseason. Despite his best efforts and strong play down the stretch this season, they still had to part ways with Kolby Allard.
Stephen Vogt’s team outrighted the bullpen contributor to Triple-A Columbus on Thursday, and he chose free agency. Nevertheless, this might not be the end of the line for him in Cleveland.
According to a report by team insider Paul Hoynes, the team might still be interested in his services. They will most likely try to make a run at him and bring him back at some point in the offseason:
“[Kolby] Allard did everything the Guardians asked. I’m sure his performance in 2025 will get him a big-league job somewhere in 2026. I think the Guardians may try to re-sign him later this offseason,” Hoynes wrote.
Of course, this is a risky gamble. There’s always a chance that he won’t be available by the time they make a run at him, but that’s just the way things go in terms of roster-building.
Allard gave the Guardians some strong performances out of the bullpen, and he even got a chance to take the mound as a starter. He logged a 2.63 ERA and 1.20 WHIP as well as 42 strikeouts against 14 walks. He usually got several innings of work, proving to be a reliable workhorse more often than not.
This team has plenty of solid options on the mound, both in the starting rotation and the bullpen. Nevertheless, they need to add some more depth as well.
Allard is already familiar with the organization and what they want to do. And after watching him do so well last season, they definitely need to find a way to bring him back.
