Seven straight wins. A 31-22 record. A season high winning streak built on the back of pitching, defense, and clutch baseball at every level of the roster. Stephen Vogt has watched all of it unfold from the dugout, and after Friday night in Philadelphia, he was not shy about explaining what he saw.
“What a beautiful game. If you like pitching, you would have really liked tonight’s game. I mean, you know, Sanchez was that special. Gavin matched that inning for inning. And like I said, just a really well-pitched game on both sides, and really one mistake all night, and Manzo didn’t miss it. Just a really well-pitched game,” Vogt said.
Gavin Williams gave them the canvas to work with on Friday night. He went 8.0 innings at Citizens Bank Park against one of the most dangerous lineups in the National League, allowing just four hits and no runs while striking out 11 Phillies batters without issuing a single walk. Phillies lefty Cristopher Sanchez was equally dominant on the other side, stretching his scoreless innings streak to 37 2/3 frames by the time he exited after eight shutout innings of his own. Two elite pitching performances played out in real time in front of a Philadelphia crowd that had nothing to cheer about.
The one mistake came in the ninth. Jhoan Duran left a 97 mph splitter knee high over the middle of the plate, and Kyle Manzardo did not miss it. The pinch hit solo home run cleared the left field wall and gave Cleveland a 1-0 win.
Cade Smith made sure the one run held up, needing just eight pitches to close out the ninth with a strikeout of Kyle Schwarber for his third save in four days. He now leads the majors with 17 saves in 19 chances, and his ability to lock games down on back to back nights without any sign of fatigue has become one of the most reliable elements of this entire roster.
The Guardians enter Saturday at 31-22, firmly in control of the American League Central and riding momentum that feels different from anything they have built during a regular season stretch in recent memory. Seven in a row. A manager who knows exactly why they keep winning. A roster that believes every night that they will find a way.
