The Cleveland Guardians made a quiet roster move Sunday, one that officially closes out a lengthy injury rehabilitation process for one of their younger arms.
According to MLB.com’s Tim Stebbins, the Guardians activated Andrew Walters from the 15-day injured list and optioned him to Triple-A Columbus.

The move brings to a close a rehab process that stretched back to before the season even began. Walters was placed on the 15-day injured list retroactive to March 22nd, 2026, while recovering from right lat surgery he underwent during the 2025 season. He was transferred to the 60-day injured list in June of last year after the lat strain was deemed serious enough to require an extended recovery timeline. Cleveland activated him from the 60-day IL in November of 2025, and he spent the early portion of spring training with the Guardians Prospects group before embarking on a rehab assignment with Triple-A Columbus in April.
The fact that he was activated from the IL and optioned rather than placed back on it is an encouraging sign. It means the organization considers him healthy and ready to pitch, just not quite ready to step into a big league role at this moment. Getting him back to Columbus to build innings and sharpen his feel for pitches after such a long absence makes all the sense in the world.
Walters, 25, has shown flashes of significant upside in his brief big league exposure, posting a 1.80 ERA across 11 career appearances covering 10 innings, with eight strikeouts. Those are the kinds of numbers that explain why the organization has been patient with his recovery rather than rushing him back before he was ready.
His minor league track record backs up the optimism as well. Walters earned EAS Post-Season All-Star honors with the Akron RubberDucks in 2024 and was named to the All-Spring Breakout Second Team that same year, signaling that the tools were very much present before injuries interrupted his development.
Getting Walters healthy and back on the mound at Triple-A gives Cleveland another live arm to monitor as the season progresses.
