“The strikeout race is arguably more compelling than the ERA title because Gavin Williams of the Cleveland Guardians will likely get the nod on Friday against the Kansas City Royals. Since the Guardians can’t wrap up the AL Central until Friday at the earliest, Williams will likely have a regular outing. Williams has 15 strikeouts in 11.2 innings against the Royals this season, but he hasn’t faced them since May 5,” Wells wrote.
The reasoning comes down to Cleveland’s position in the standings. Because the Guardians cannot officially clinch the AL Central until Friday at the earliest, there is no reason for the coaching staff to skip Williams’ turn in the rotation or manage his workload differently than usual. That means he should get a normal, full length outing against Kansas City, giving him a real opportunity to close the gap on Misiorowski or potentially even pass him for the overall lead.
History offers a mixed picture for how that matchup might go. Williams has faced the Royals just once this season, striking out 15 batters across 11.2 innings, but he has not seen them since May 5, making it difficult to know exactly what to expect several months later. Regardless of the outcome, the opportunity itself is significant for a pitcher who has emerged as one of Cleveland’s most important arms during the stretch run.
Williams is not the only Guardians player featured prominently on the league leaderboard heading into the final weekend. Closer Cade Smith is tied for the AL lead in saves with 40, matching Tampa Bay’s Bryan Baker, another reflection of just how deep Cleveland’s pitching staff has been all season. Between Williams chasing a strikeout title and Smith already among the league’s best in saves, the Guardians have built their identity around exactly the kind of frontline and late-inning pitching that tends to matter most once October arrives.
