Travis Bazzana’s rookie season has generated growing buzz around the Rookie of the Year conversation, and former big league pitcher Jensen Lewis made clear he saw this coming well before Cleveland’s top pick ever set foot on a major league field. Bazzana has continued to produce since his call up. His overall line now sits at .248 with nine home runs, 33 RBI, and a .762 OPS through 70 games, numbers that reflect the kind of everyday impact the Guardians envisioned when they promoted him. Speaking on BIGPLAY Cleveland, Lewis explained that he had enough conviction in Bazzana’s future to bet on it the night before the promotion even happened.
Lewis described placing a long odds bet on Bazzana for Rookie of the Year the night before Cleveland officially called him up.
“No doubt [I see Travis Bazzana in the Rookie of the Year conversation]. The night before he got called up, I took a little share of him at 75 to 1 for Rookie of the Year. You had to. You’re not calling him up to sit. You’re not calling him up to just face right-handed hitting. He’s coming in there to play every day, but more importantly, they brought him up so that there could be a lot of infusion offensively at the top of the lineup,” Lewis said.

Lewis explained that the larger purpose behind the call up was to inject much-needed offense at the top of Cleveland’s lineup, a role Bazzana has grown into over his first 70 major league games. That growth has included several signature moments already, from his walk-off home run against Pittsburgh last weekend to his RBI single in Tuesday’s win over the Twins, part of a personal streak that has seen him hit safely in most of his games since the calendar flipped to July. Bazzana’s status as the No. 1 overall pick in the 2024 draft only adds to the storyline, giving Cleveland a top pick who has already delivered tangible results in his first extended big league opportunity.
With the Guardians continuing to push for position in a tight AL Central race, having a rookie perform at this level in the middle of a playoff chase adds another compelling piece to Cleveland’s season. As the second half continues, Bazzana’s case for postseason hardware figures to only grow louder if he keeps producing at this pace.
