The trade deadline conversation around the Cleveland Guardians keeps building, and the latest voice weighing in carries some of the most credible credentials in the business. Former MLB general manager Jim Bowden published his quarter-mark team outlook piece in The Athletic this week, and he made his assessment about the Guardians.
“Trade deadline position: Buyers. The Guardians aren’t going away but the front office will need to acquire some offensive reinforcements,” Bowden wrote.
Bowden has seen what a roster looks like from the inside when it needs something, and his read on Cleveland is that the talent is there but the offense needs help before October arrives.
The buyer designation will not surprise anyone who has been following the Guardians closely this season. Cleveland sits at 29-22, in first place in the AL Central and riding a five-game winning streak heading into Thursday’s series finale against Detroit. The pitching has been outstanding. The bullpen is one of the best in the American League. The starting rotation has given this team a chance to compete in virtually every game it has played.
The offensive side is where the questions remain. First base has been inconsistent, with both Kyle Manzardo and Rhys Hoskins yet to consistently deliver the production Cleveland envisioned when the season began. The overall lineup has shown flashes of its ceiling, particularly during the current winning streak, but the depth of the offensive supporting cast behind Jose Ramirez, Angel Martinez, Chase DeLauter and Travis Bazzana has not always been reliable enough to carry the load night after night.
The front office challenge, as it has been for years in Cleveland, is finding a way to add offensive impact without surrendering the prospect capital or taking on the financial commitments that would compromise the organization’s long-term flexibility.
The Guardians are not going away. Bowden said so himself. The only question is whether the front office gives this roster what it needs to take the next step when the summer trade market opens up.
