The Cleveland Guardians have been treading water for much of the 2025 MLB season and currently find themselves at 35-32 and 8.5 games behind the Detroit Tigers, who have been the best team in the American League so far.
A frustrating offseason that featured plenty of cost-cutting moves instead of any big splashes has played a role in the team’s current uninspiring position, and the most obvious aspect of the team that needed an upgrade was the offense, which has regressed following last year’s run to the ALCS.
On a recent episode of The Carlos Baerga Show, the former Guardian was fired up and called out the team’s offense for failing to do the little things needed to win ballgames, such as moving runners over or bunting.
Carlos is absolutely fired up about the #Guards inability to move runners. #GuardsBall

Cleveland ranks in the bottom third of the league in nearly all major offensive categories, including runs scored, batting average, on-base percentage, slugging percentage, doubles, and home runs, so the issues run much deeper than simply struggling to do the little things.
Bunting isn’t seen too often in today’s era of advanced analytics, but there are 11 players on this roster batting under .210 this season, so unless some of the hitters can get hot, this team is going to have to get creative in order to consistently score runs.
Lane Thomas and David Fry are the two players who could change the trajectory of this offense the most, as both have struggled mightily this season, albeit in small sample sizes.
The two have recently returned from injury and are still knocking off some rust, but if the Guardians are going to go anywhere this season, they need production from these two key bats.
Doing the little things is important, but there’s only so much you can do when half the team is batting under .200.
