The MLB trade deadline is just a couple of days away and the now-.500 Cleveland Guardians need to make a move in the worst way. The AL Central is gradually slipping away as the Chicago White Sox now have a three-game lead while the Guardians can’t stop losing, but there is a lot of season left if POBO Sam Antonetti and the front office can go get this team the shot in the arm that it so clearly needs.
In 2024, the Guardians made a move like that when they acquired outfielder Lane Thomas to help bolster the stretch run and it helped them lock up the division and nearly make it to the World Series. Two years later, Thomas’ bat would have been a nice addition to the Guardians’ lineup once again, but he is now on the move elsewhere after being traded ahead of the deadline again.
ESPN’s Jeff Passan shared on X that the Atlanta Braves acquired Lane Thomas and left-hander Bailey Falter on Saturday. In return, the Royals received the Braves’ No. 8 prospect, right-hander Lucas Braun as well as lefty Carter Holton.

Obviously, the Braves have a shot to make a deep run in the postseason while the Royals are deep in the cellar in the AL, so this wasn’t a surprising trade at all. Atlanta needed another right-handed outfielder and Thomas has an .800 OPS against lefties this year while the Royals got a couple of intriguing arms for the future, so it should be a win-win.
Cleveland has six games left against the Royals this season, who are now just a little bit worse. It also has seven games remaining against the Detroit Tigers, who pushed us all closer to a lockout by gifting Tarik Skubal to the Los Angeles Dodgers on Friday. To have two teams in the AL Central start waving the white flag will only help the Guardians, as those 13 games against these two teams just got a little bit easier.
Someone like Thomas would help the Guardians, but hopefully Antonetti has his eyes set on something bigger. The farm system has plenty of talent now and much of it is blocked at the big league level, so it’s time to go fishing for something big.
