The Cleveland Guardians have built their recent success around several key contributors, but manager Stephen Vogt remains the central figure holding everything together. His ability to connect with players while managing the tactical side of the game has turned Cleveland into a consistent contender.
After another impressive season, Vogt is once again a strong candidate for American League Manager of the Year following his win in 2024.
Newly appointed Baltimore Orioles manager Craig Albernaz recently discussed what makes Vogt’s leadership approach so effective.
“That’s what Vogt is. He’s himself. He’s an elite person, elite communicator. He has a way about him where he can make everyone in the clubhouse feel like they’re José Ramírez, and that’s the special sauce with him. He genuinely cares and loves every person in that locker room, every person that’s in that organization. He’s really great at the Xs and Os, too. He’s really good with the in-game decisions, and then also communicating those decisions,” Albernaz said.

Albernaz spent the past two seasons working alongside Vogt in Cleveland and plans to bring elements of that philosophy to his new role with the Orioles. Vogt guided the Guardians to their second consecutive American League Central title in 2025 despite facing significant obstacles throughout the season.
Cleveland overcame a 15 ½-game deficit in the second half while managing multiple suspensions and injuries across the roster. That ability to maintain focus and cohesion under pressure has defined Vogt’s tenure as manager.
His first season in 2024 ended with the Guardians capturing the division and Vogt earning Manager of the Year honors. Now, as a finalist for the award again, his work has set a standard that other organizations are beginning to study and adopt.
Albernaz’s move to Baltimore represents a notable loss for Cleveland’s coaching staff. The two former colleagues will face each other in late April when the Orioles visit for a three-game series.
With Vogt and José Ramírez leading the way, the Guardians are positioned to remain competitive in the years ahead as they continue building on the foundation established over the past two seasons.
