The Cleveland Guardians’ 2025 season ended Thursday with a 6-3 loss to the Detroit Tigers in Game 3 of the American League Wild Card Series at Progressive Field.
After a historic late-season comeback to win the AL Central, the Guardians couldn’t overcome their divisional rivals when it mattered most.
The game remained tied 1-1 through five innings before Tigers catcher Dillon Dingler launched a solo home run in the sixth.
Detroit then broke it open with a four-run seventh inning, exploiting weaknesses in Cleveland’s bullpen that had been reliable for much of the season.
The Guardians mounted a response in the eighth with two runs, including a José Ramírez RBI single, but Detroit shut down any further rally attempts.

Fans reacted with mixed emotions following the elimination.
One wrote, “This may be the most interesting season by a non-title winner in the history of baseball, and maybe the history of sports.”
Another added, “As a lifelong Guardians fan, I’m totally ok with the result of the series! We still came back and won the division, and that can’t be taken from us.”
Others expressed frustration with the franchise’s direction.
One commented, “Appreciate the heart and fight from this group. We all know what needs to happen. Spend a couple dollars, Paul.”
Another highlighted, “77th straight season without a World Series championship.”
One more wrote, “I think Cleveland sports are just a conspiracy and social experiment to see how much misery people will willingly put into their lives.”
Cleveland’s pitching depth showed vulnerability as Tigers hitters found gaps late in the game. Starter Slade Cecconi couldn’t contain Detroit’s momentum, and the bullpen faltered under pressure during the critical seventh inning.
The Guardians’ season-long struggles with power hitting persisted, making it difficult to capitalize on scoring opportunities despite timely connections.
The defeat closes a remarkable season defined by overcoming a 15.5-game deficit to capture the division.
Detroit’s clutch hitting in key moments ended Cleveland’s playoff run as the Tigers advance to face the Seattle Mariners in the AL Division Series.
For the Guardians, attention now shifts to the offseason and building on a campaign that energized fans with resilience and historic comebacks.
