The Cleveland Guardians have lost five of their last six games, including the three they played this week after the trade deadline. Yes, their haul was amazing, but baseball is a cruel mistress: they are 0-3 since bringing in five potential contributors.
One of those players acquired on Monday, first baseman Nathaniel Lowe, is not only playing well, but he is effectively carrying the offense despite the poor collective results. After coming over from Cincinnati, the lefty-swinging slugger has done nothing but produce.
In three games with his new team, Lowe has four hits, including a double, a homer, and five RBI. He also scored a run and walked once.
Lowe is actually enjoying a very nice year between the two Ohio teams. He is slashing an incredible .269/.343/.488 with a 123 wRC+, which means he has produced 23 percent more than the league-average hitter.
He has homered 13 times with 42 RBI, but the extent of his power production goes well beyond homers. He also has 18 doubles and boasts a healthy 10 percent walk rate.
The Guardians gave Kyle Manzardo every chance to re-establish himself as a long-term contributor in Cleveland, particularly after his amazing 2025 in which he slugged 27 home runs and posted a 113 wRC+. This year, however, he regressed and was a below-average hitter when Cleveland made the decision to send him down.
The hope is that the demotion is a wake-up call for Manzardo, who still has a chance to become the Guardians’ first baseman of the future against right-handers, as Lowe will be a free agent when the season ends.
It’s still too early to tell, but Lowe’s tenure with the Guardians is off to a very solid start. So far, he has been everything the team hoped he would be: someone who could become a reliable, consistent producer in the middle of their lineup. He has showcased his pop, and God knows Cleveland badly needed some of it.
Among deadline acquisitions, Lowe has been, by far, the best and most impressive in the first week post-deadline.
