The Cleveland Guardians are still alive in the AL playoff race.
However, they need to be almost flawless the rest of the way.
After losing the final game of their series with the Seattle Mariners, second baseman Daniel Schneemann opened up on the team’s mindset for the remainder of the season.
“I think we know we’ve just got to win a lot of games,” Schneemann said. “We try to take it one day at a time, but we know it’s going to take a big month from us. So let’s just start with Boston [this week].”
The Guardians missed an opportunity to keep closing the gap between them and the Mariners in the AL Wild Card race.
A win on Sunday would’ve put Cleveland two games behind.
Even so, the team has refused to throw in the towel, and it continues to fight hard through adversity.
Winning four out of six games against the Tampa Bay Rays and Mariners was a huge morale boost for a team that desperately needed to win a series again.
Now, heading into September, the margin for error is closer to zero, and the Guardians will open the month with a seven-game road trip.
They’ll visit the Boston Red Sox, another team in the mix for a wild card, and the Rays.
Cleveland also has to face the Kansas City Royals four times and the Texas Rangers three times, and they have six games remaining against the AL Central-leading Detroit Tigers.
The opportunities will be there, but the Guardians can’t afford to come up short.
