Chase DeLauter has been building an impressive rookie season all year, but Sunday’s performance in Denver pushed him into franchise history. The outfielder recorded two triples in Cleveland’s series-clinching win over the Rockies, becoming just the fourth rookie in team history to accomplish that feat.
DeLauter finished the day reaching base four times, adding a single and a walk to go along with his two triples and two RBIs, powering the Guardians to a 7-2 victory that completed a three-game sweep at Coors Field. It marked his third triple of the season and gave Cleveland a performance that had not been matched by a rookie in franchise history since 1990.

The list of players DeLauter joined reads like a piece of Cleveland baseball history. Alex Cole accomplished the feat back on September 12, 1990, while Chico Salmon and Vic Davalillo both did it decades earlier, on August 30, 1964 and May 25, 1963 respectively. DeLauter, who returned to the lineup this week after briefly missing time with left hamstring tightness, admitted afterward that he could not recall ever recording two triples in a game at any level of his career, making Sunday’s feat all the more remarkable.
The performance capped off a red-hot August for the 24-year-old rookie, who has now reached base in 16 of his last 17 games while batting .348 over that stretch. DeLauter credited the rest of the lineup, particularly the newer additions and the bottom of the batting order, for setting the tone during Cleveland’s recent surge, even as his own individual numbers have been just as impressive during the same stretch.
Sunday’s win pushed the Guardians to 65-66 on the season and extended their winning streak to four games, pulling the club to within 3 and a half games of the division-leading White Sox. With DeLauter continuing to develop into one of the most productive young hitters on the roster, his historic night in Denver serves as another reminder of just how much upside this rookie class has provided during Cleveland’s push toward the postseason.
