The Cleveland Guardians find themselves at a crossroads as the trade deadline approaches, with All-Star closer Emmanuel Clase squarely in the spotlight.
After a disappointing 9-16 record in June and their slide in the AL Wild Card race, the front office could move some core players to prepare for 2026.
Clase’s name continues surfacing in trade conversations, particularly given his struggles and inconsistent performance this season.
Veteran Cleveland analyst Bruce Drennan recently addressed the situation during his recent podcast, offering strong support for Cade Smith as Clase’s potential replacement.
“Absolutely. I have no reservations in that at all. As I pointed out a couple of weeks ago, before I changed my mind on Clase, I don’t think we miss a beat [if Emmanuel Clase gets moved]. Then, we’ll have other guys healthy from the pen that have been hurt this year. That bullpen will remain one of the best in the majors, so I’m not worried or concerned about that,” Drennan said.

The timing of these discussions couldn’t be more critical. At just 26, Smith has quietly emerged as one of the Guardians’ most reliable bullpen weapons.
Now in his second MLB season, he’s posted an impressive 1.29 ERA across 14 innings while recording 17 strikeouts and three saves.
Manager Stephen Vogt has shown increasing confidence in Smith during high-pressure situations, including several ninth-inning appearances while Clase recovered from his shoulder issues.
Moreover, Opponents are hitting just .200 against Smith.
With Hunter Gaddis providing additional depth, Cleveland’s bullpen appears equipped to handle a potential Clase departure.
Despite his recent struggles, Clase’s team-friendly contract and past dominance still make him attractive trade bait. Should a deal materialize, Smith appears ready for the spotlight.
