The Cleveland Guardians are a borderline .500 team right now.
They’ve flirted with .500 baseball for weeks now, and while they’re still second in the AL Central division, they don’t look like a legitimate World Series contender at the moment.
That’s why Bruce Drennan believes that the front office has to have some awkward conversations and determine this team’s best course of action ahead of the trade deadline:
“Depending on where we are at the break, the Cleveland front office must determine whether to roll the dice and think that we are still a realistic wildcard contender, or do we sell-off?” Drennan asked.

To be fair, it might still be too early in the season to say for sure that this team can’t compete for a postseason spot.
They’re just 0.5 games behind the Boston Red Sox for the final wild card spot, and we’ve seen them get red hot multiple times in the past.
Nevertheless, if they truly believe they can make a run, they can’t stay put and just double down on this lineup.
If they think they can return to the ALCS, they will have to add more firepower to their offense, especially in the outfield.
Whatever they decide to do, the Guardians simply cannot afford not to make any moves at the deadline.
They need to either offload some veterans and give up on the season – at least on paper – or make some aggressive moves to give Steven Kwan and Jose Ramirez a helping hand, even if that means losing some prospects.
We’re still weeks away from the deadline, and a lot can happen until that day, so the next six games or so will be crucial to make-or-break this campaign.
