Angel Martinez’s Catch On Friday Is Going Viral

The Cleveland Guardians’ offense had another bad day at the office on Friday, losing 4-1 to the Arizona Diamondbacks after an eighth-inning collapse by the bullpen. To make matters worse, the Minnesota Twins won again and have officially caught the Guardians to move into a tie for second place in the AL Central.

It was a disappointing result, but things weren’t all bad on Friday. Manager Stephen Vogt threw Angel Martinez into the leadoff spot to try to get his bat going, but he is now 0-for-18 since coming back from injury. Luckily, his cold bat has not impacted his glove as he made the play of the day in all of baseball on Friday.

MLB.com’s Tim Stebbins shared a clip of the ridiculous catch Martinez made in the first inning on Friday. D’Backs catcher Gabriel Moreno floated a fly ball into foul territory down the right field line and Martinez made a leaping catch falling into the netting and landing in the seats.

It was quite the play that speaks to the notable improvement Martinez made over the course of this season. His defense has gone up a level and he may have a Gold Glove in his future one day if he can stay healthy and consistent over the course of a whole season.

As solid as the defense has been, Martinez needs to find the offensive spark he had earlier in the season prior to his injury. His numbers are plummeting down around what they were last season and the Guardians’ offense desperately needs somebody to light a fire in the locker room.

Martinez is still just 24 and could certainly be knocking off some rust following his foot injury, but that doesn’t take away from how impressive this catch is. Perhaps that incredible play will give him the confidence to start raking again as well.
