Everybody focuses on stat lines and scouting reports when evaluating a baseball player. It’s the most straightforward way to do it, yes, but there’s more to player evaluation than reading numbers or watching the tools. The mind plays a huge role, too. These are people we are talking about, with feelings and problems.
How a ballplayer approaches the successes and failures he will experience at the highest level will be the difference between an amazing career and a disappointing MLB tenure.
A lot has changed for Cleveland Guardians’ switch-hitter Angel Martinez this year. He went from being an 83-wRC+ hitter in 2024 and a 74 one in 2025 to sporting a 129 mark this season so far.
He already has nine home runs and eight stolen bases, amazing totals that hint at 20-20 or 30-30 potential. Yes, he has made some adjustments at the plate, but he also seems more mature.
Perhaps he focused too much on his struggles in the past, but he is now taking things game by game, day by day. And that has apparently helped him break out and realize his significant potential.
“The game’s not really over. You just focus on the next game, and I feel like that’s going to keep me at the same level,” Martinez said.

Little by little. Game by game. Martinez believes that’s the way to slowly build a great season. And he’s right. It’s working for him, and why fix what ain’t broke?
Martinez blossoming into a well-above-average batter has given manager Stephen Vogt options. He can be deployed as a middle-of-the-order masher, taking advantage of his contact-oriented approach and newfound power, and he can also be used as a catalyst at the top of the lineup.
Oh, and Martinez can also cover multiple positions in the outfield and the infield. He is not the best defensive player on the team, but he won’t hurt you anywhere. And that’s a plus for Vogt.
As long as Martinez keeps himself focused, the results will likely keep coming. He seems calmer and more mature, and knowing how to handle both the good and the bad moments has really made a difference.
The Guardians are lucky to have him. He is helping transform the offense into a reliable, consistent unit.
