The Cleveland Guardians aren’t like the New York Yankees or Boston Red Sox.
They’re not going to go out of their way to spend a lot of money on free agents to lure big-name players.
Not only do the Guardians know that they can’t compete financially with other MLB powerhouses, but they won’t even try to.
Nevertheless, as much as fans have criticized the ownership for being cheap, analyst Andre Knott believes the Guardians have no choice but to make some investments this offseason.
Talking on ESPN Cleveland, Knott said the team has to address two glaring needs.
“They’re not gonna go out and spend $150 million this offseason, but they probably do need to spend $20, $30, $40 million and go out and get another reliever and get a legitimate right-handed batter,” Knott said.

The Guardians’ bullpen was among the best in baseball this season, but even good things can be better, and they were slightly shorthanded toward the end.
As for a right-handed slugger, that’s been a constant point of conversation.
The Guardians most likely hope that one of their young players will turn out to be the guy they need, and several have the potential to be a star.
Then again, counting on prospects isn’t always the safest bet.
The Guardians have to let them grow through their mistakes and develop, but they also need to bring in some proven veterans if they’re serious about competing for a World Series title.
