The Cleveland Guardians struggled mightily in June.
They ceded plenty of ground in the AL Central race as their offense hit rock bottom.
Nevertheless, despite all their struggles, they’re not that far behind in the AL Wild Card race.
That’s why analyst Matt Fontana doesn’t want to see the Guardians throw in the towel.
If anything, he believes they might be just one position away from turning things around.
“If they went and made a move for an everyday starting second baseman that’s an average veteran hitter, does that do it for you? Maybe, maybe. Just a little more consistency. Go make that move,” Fontana said.
What player could the Guardians go out and get to become contenders?
"An everyday starting second baseman that's an average veteran hitter."

That has been a major issue all season.
Unfortunately, it doesn’t appear like they will actively try to improve the roster.
If anything, they will most likely be sellers at the trade deadline.
It wouldn’t be a surprise to see the team part with Carlos Santana, and Emmanuel Clase has been mentioned in trade rumors.
The Guardians have multiple promising infield prospects to consider, including Travis Bazzana.
Then again, an injury cost him a big portion of his season in the minors, so they may not want to rush him into the majors right now.
But unless the Guardians suddenly find a reinforcement from within, it’s hard to believe that they’re going to have a chance to get back to the ALCS this season.
