Over the past couple of weeks, the Cleveland Guardians have been mentioned in trade rumors for multiple big-name players.
However, of all the potential offseason candidates, Bo Bichette’s name seems to be the one that pops up most often.
Kerry Miller of Bleacher Report took a hard look at those rumors and Bichette’s situation and doesn’t seem to like the Guardians’ chances of getting a deal done with the Toronto Blue Jays’ All-Star infielder.
“The first couple of teams we’ll encounter on this list are considerable long shots for financial reasons. This franchise has never invested more than $60 million in a free agent, so tripling that out of nowhere for Bichette almost certainly isn’t happening. But if they felt like investing in their offense for a change, shortstop is the low-hanging fruit where they stand to gain around 100 points of batting average,” Miller wrote.
This isn’t a surprise, as the Guardians have made a living by spending wisely.
More than that, as good as Bichette is, and as much as he could help their ever-struggling offense, the Guardians have several options in the middle of the infield with Brayan Rocchio, Gabriel Arias, Angel Martinez, Juan Brito and Daniel Schneemann.
Though Bichette would be an offensive upgrade over all of them, Cleveland also has top prospect Travis Bazzana waiting in line.
That’s to say that, if the Guardians were to spend big on a free agent, they would most likely do so somewhere else, maybe on an outfielder.
