In MLB, the win-loss record is what decides division races, Wild Card spots, and overall standings. It’s normal, it’s natural, and it’s expected. It’s the way it should be.
However, win-loss record can be misleading sometimes. Good teams might be fourth in the divisional standings at a certain point, but with a positive run differential that indicates better days are ahead. The same can be said about bad teams: they might find themselves at the top of their division, but a bad run differential usually suggests they have been playing above their head.
Essentially, run differential is not the be-all, end-all, but it’s important for assessing a team’s ability to score runs and prevent them. The Cleveland Guardians had been playing with a negative differential for months… until Tuesday.
“Today’s a joyous day. You know why that is, right? I look at the standings, and your Cleveland Guardians have something that I’ve been envious of. Dating all the way back to June 7th, you’re gonna have to check the raw data on this. Is that a positive run differential I see for the Guardians? It’s been almost three months. Now, I can take them seriously,” analyst Anthony Lima said in a chat with Ken Carman.

The Guardians entered Tuesday’s opener against the Toronto Blue Jays with a -3 run differential. After winning 6-1, it is now +3, a net positive for the first time since June 7. Those were the days when Cleveland started to cede some ground to the Chicago White Sox in the division.
As of Wednesday, the Guardians are 70-68, three games behind the White Sox in the quest for the AL Central. A solid September might help them win their third straight division title.
With perfect harmony between the rotation, the bullpen, the offense, the defense, and managing/coaching, the Guardians appear to be peaking at the right time, just like last season. They will have to show it on the field, but this is a team that can certainly compete with the White Sox and other MLB powerhouses.
The 2026 Guardians might have their flaws, but they have grit, heart, and talent.
