Every MLB team needs a boost from time to time, and if it comes from within the organization, it’s even better. Sometimes, calling up a prospect from the minors can change the entire outlook of a season, and the Cleveland Guardians know this.
They have experienced it through the years with multiple prospects, from Francisco Lindor in 2015 to Parker Messick and George Valera last year. So, who could be that player for the Guardians in 2026?
MLB.com went through one potential impact call-up for each team, and, unsurprisingly, Travis Bazzana was named when analyzing the Guardians.
“The Guardians aren’t getting much offense out of their middle infield, a shortcoming that the No. 1 overall pick in the 2024 Draft could address. Few prospects can combine hitting ability, raw power, and plate discipline like [Travis] Bazzana can, even if his Triple-A numbers (.227/.396/.422 in 35 games over two seasons) are more modest than expected,” Dykstra, Callis, and Mayo wrote.
Bazzana has developed nicely since being selected with the No. 1 pick in the 2024 MLB Draft. Perhaps he doesn’t have the ceiling of Konnor Griffin or Kevin McGonigle, but he projects as an All-Star-type of player at his peak and that’s nothing to sneeze at.
An everyday position opened up in Cleveland when Gabriel Arias went down with a hamstring strain, but the Guardians decided to call up Juan Brito instead of Bazzana. Yes, they surely don’t want to start his service clock so soon, but the Australian is hitting just .209 through his first ten games in Triple-A Columbus, with an 83 wRC+. He still hasn’t found his rhythm.
Bazzana doesn’t have any home runs yet, but does have two doubles, two triples, and two steals. In other words, he is still trying to hit his stride, but once he does, he will be an obvious fit in the MLB lineup.
We know what Bazzana is capable of in Double-A and Triple-A, as his 137 wRC+ between the two levels last year suggests. If he is able to produce something close to that as a major leaguer, the Guardians might be able to turn an organizational weakness into a strength: all they would need to do is slide the surging Brayan Rocchio to shortstop and use Bazzana as their everyday second baseman.
