The name Daniel Espino has been attached to the Cleveland Guardians organization for a long time, and for most of that time the conversation has centered on what could have been rather than what is.
That narrative may finally be changing.
The Daily Guards shared a clip in which analyst Justin Lada made a compelling case for why Espino deserves to be on the radar of anyone following this organization heading into the second half of April.
“The guy that is really interesting to keep an eye on, and it depends on when they need help with the schedule, is Daniel Espino who is finally healthy. He’s pitched really well. He’s not walking anybody, guys are not hitting the ball hard off him. The velocity is back, which is great. The slider is there,” Lada said.

Espino was drafted 24th overall by the Cleveland Indians in the first round of the 2019 MLB Draft out of Georgia Premier Academy. He was one of the most electric pitching prospects in the entire minor league system at the time, a 6-foot, 225-pound right-hander from Panama with a power fastball. The ceiling was enormous.
Then the injuries came.
Espino landed on the 60-day injured list with Columbus in March of 2025. He was not activated until September of that year. He spent time in the Arizona Fall League with the Surprise Saguaros trying to rebuild his rhythm after yet another lost season. When Cleveland optioned him back to Columbus at the start of March 2026, it was another reminder of just how long and difficult this road has been.
But his 2026 spring training offered a genuine reason for optimism. Espino posted a 0.00 ERA across 2.0 innings in two spring appearances, striking out three and walking nobody while holding opponents to a .500 WHIP.
When Espino has been healthy and right, the pure stuff has never been the question. The question has always been whether his body would allow him to stay on the mound long enough to show it consistently.
At 25 years old, Espino still has time. Cleveland kept him on the 40-man roster and optioned him to Columbus rather than moving on, which tells you the organization has not given up on what he can become. He is currently pitching for the Columbus Clippers in Triple-A, and the early returns in 2026 have been encouraging enough to generate this kind of buzz.
If Daniel Espino can stay healthy and maintain what he has been showing at Columbus, he could see his time soon in the big leagues.
It has been a long time coming.
