The Cleveland Guardians are serious about their intentions of contending in 2026, adding five players before the trade deadline: outfielders Blake Perkins and Jo Adell, first baseman/designated hitter Nathaniel Lowe, starter Foster Griffin, and reliever Craig Yoho.
None of them are game-changing superstars, but the cost for those was prohibitive in many cases. Nearly all of them, however, are proven, above-average performers who can help the Guardians take the next step.
Analyst Tony Rizzo loved the Guardians’ pre-deadline work and believes they are in a much better position to compete now.
“Finally. Thank you. The Guardians got help, folks, and they did it without giving up any of their top 20 prospects. Foster Griffin is 12-3. You’ve got a right fielder who can play DH in Jo Adell. 16 home runs, 62 RBI. It’ll be first base or DH, too, with Nathaniel Lowe from the Reds. You got guys that are better than what we’re trotting out there right now. I love the move. How you like me now, Paul Dolan says. Thank you, Mr. Dolan,” Rizzo said.

Catcher Jacob Cozart, who was sent to the Los Angeles Angels in exchange for Adell, was the highest-ranked Guardians prospect dealt on Monday, and he was in the 20s. Other departures were Bo Naylor, Codi Heuer, Nick Mitchell, Kendeglys Virguez, Josh Hartle, Will Dion, and Alejandro Rivera. Cleveland values them all, but the truth is that they probably won’t be missed, and the upside of adding win-now pieces is far more enticing.
Adell is now the Guardians’ leader in home runs in 2026 with 16, and he is a true asset against left-handed pitchers. Lowe has a 120 wRC+ and is far more reliable than Kyle Manzardo at this juncture. Perkins is a nice bench piece with speed and versatility, and Yoho’s elite changeup is already paying dividends.
Griffin, an All-Star with the Washington Nationals in 2026, gives the Guardians options as they put together their rotation. They now have cover if someone gets hurt or if they want to remove the struggling Slade Cecconi from the pitching staff.
No, Cleveland didn’t bring in any superstars. However, they acquired some much-needed reinforcements without touching the foundation of the team and their top prospects such as Angel Genao, Cooper Ingle, Braylon Doughty, Khal Stephen, or Ralphy Velazquez.
